About One Rep Max Lab: Built From a Hard Lesson

Every lifter knows the moment. You are under the bar, the program says 85%, and a quiet doubt asks whether the number behind that percentage is real.

One Rep Max Lab exists to remove that doubt. We turn a set you have already completed into a strength estimate you can understand, question and use with confidence, without testing a heavy single.

Why One Rep Max Lab Exists

Most programs hand you percentages and assume you already know your max. Most online tools give you one number and no explanation. Neither tells you how accurate the figure is or why two tools disagree.

We built this lab to show its work, so you know what is on the bar and why.

A strength estimate is a tool, not a verdict. A good one shows its range, explains its limits and helps you decide what to do in your next session, whether that means adding weight, holding steady or backing off.

Meet Shaw, the Lifter Behind the Lab

I am Shaw, the founder of One Rep Max Lab and a lifter with eight years of weightlifting experience. In that time I learned that strength is built by effort and by knowing where you stand.

Load too heavy and the session becomes a fight you did not need. Load too light and the progress you worked for stays unclaimed.

I learned the first part the hard way. One late night, alone in the gym, I loaded the bar with a weight I had not earned and went under it without sensing the danger. No spotter, no safety net, and no honest number to tell me I was out of my depth. What happened next could have ended far worse than it did, and I have never forgotten it.

That night changed how I train. I stopped treating a heavy single as a test of ego and started asking a better question: how do I know what my body can handle before I put it under the bar?

One Rep Max Lab is my answer. I built it so that no other lifter has to learn this lesson the way I did. Use a set you have already completed, trust a reliable estimate, and never carry senseless overweight into a lift alone.

Why I Built This

I wanted a place where every lifter could step up to the bar with a number they trust. That is the purpose behind every tool and guide on this site.

Every page here is written with the same priorities: clarity, accuracy and respect for your long-term progress, so you can trust what you read and apply it with confidence.

What You Will Find Here

  • A calculator with seven formulas: Epley, Brzycki, Lander, Lombardi, Mayhew, O’Conner and Wathan, shown side by side so you can judge how consistent your estimate is.
  • Percentage table: working weights from 50% to 100% of your estimated max.
  • Warm-up ramp: a clear progression to your working weight.
  • RPE reference: training load matched to perceived effort.
  • Exercise selector: formula defaults suited to each lift.
  • Downloadable results: save your report as a PDF or image card.

You can try the calculator on our homepage, then return to the guides to understand the reasoning behind the result.

A Safer Way to Know Your Strength

Your heaviest single is not the only way to measure strength. A controlled set of 3 to 10 repetitions, where estimates are most reliable, gives you a solid working number with far less risk.

Trust is earned slowly in the gym, and we treat it the same way here: one accurate, carefully checked guide at a time.

How We Keep It Honest

  • Formula authors are named, with publication years.
  • Known limitations are explained, not hidden.
  • Where research is mixed, we say so.
  • Nothing is invented: no fake studies and no made-up stories.
